MyEtherWallet

MyEtherWallet/MEW: How to create your Ethereum wallet

MyEtherWallet  is not an online wallet, it is an open source javascript tool that runs on your pc to generate your wallet.

Unlike an online wallet like Coinbase, you are really master of your wallet: it is you who hold the private keys!

It will allow you to store, receive or send the ethers that you have previously purchased on Coinbase, or the ethers you got while mining, or with the Airdrops!

When we arrive on the site MyEtherWallet, there is this warning message:

Please beware of phishing websites. Do not enter your key on a website you arrived by clicking a link. Use bookmarks. Always triple-check the domain. Ours is dot com. You are responsible for your safety & security.

To summarize the message in French:

- Pay close attention to the address you are on (check the domain 3 times rather than once, here .com).

- Also check that you are still in https, do not enter your key on a site on which you arrived by clicking on a link.

- Use bookmarks! You are responsible for your safety and security!

Recently myetherwallet classic was hacked… (a similar site but for Ethereum Classic (ETC)). So you had to be careful and just not reconnect to it at that time. Your ethers are safe since your private addresses are either on a physical wallet (Ledger Nano or Trezor), either on a sheet of paper, or in your json file stored on a usb key or an external hard drive!

1) Create your wallet (“ wallet ”)

- Go to the site at the address: myetherwallet.com

- Choisir un mot de passe qui permettra de protéger l'accès à votre compte et l'entrer dans the box preceded by Enter a strong password (at least 9 characters). It is recommended to choose a password container at least one lowercase character, one uppercase character and a number. Feel free to use special characters (@&$%…).

The password cannot be changed or retrieved if lost, choose a secure password but don't forget it!

- Click on Generate wallet.

- The message Success! Votre portefeuille a été généré devrait s'afficher à la suite:

That's it! Your address, which is un "account number" to send the ethers to, is shown in box Backup your wallet.

It absolutely must save your private key (“Private key”), at least in an encrypted version. To do this, click Keystore/JSON File (Recommended Encrypted  Mist/Geth Format).

You can also copy the character string that appears in the case Private key (unencrypted), ou cliquer sur Fichier JSON (non‐chiffré), mais cette deuxième clé permet d'accéder without password at your ether account. If you copy this string, put it in a safe place! (bank vault, encrypted backup service…).

The last option (Print your paper wallet) allows you to keep your key… on paper! This allows you to put physically in place, and you can only access it by typing the text written on it QR code with phone.

Warning :

- Si vous perdez vos clés, ou que nous n'avez sauvegardé que la version encrypted et que vous perdez your password, you have permanently lost access to this account. There is NONE  way to recover access or find password easily. It is therefore CAPITAL to keep the keys in a safe place ET secure and from TO MEMORIZE your password. People who own a lot of virtual “actif” such as bitcoin or ether often have a “portefeuille0” at the bank, in a safe.

- La version non‐chiffrée de la clé permet d'accéder à vos ether without password: do not distribute it to anyone and do not keep any easily accessible copy.

2) Use wallet to send ether

Once the wallet has been created and the key has been saved, you can access your wallet with the link “ Send ether”.

Then you can:

- Use a file JSON downloaded in step 1 (Keystore/JSON file). Choose the wallet file choose the file before validating.

- Manually write the key (Private key) in the box that appears before validating.

In both cases, the site will ask you for the password in case of encrypted key  before allowing you access to the account. Enter the password and click Decrypt.

The status of your account is then displayed below the page :

From this state, you can send ether to another address. All you have to do is copy-paste the address to  which you want to send ether into the field destination address and indicate the amount in the field Amount to send.

You can send ether (ETH) only or ether classic (ETC) only, or make a standard transaction. If you don't understand the distinction, always use  ETH  (standard transaction).

Once the amount is indicated, click on Generate the transaction. The system then tells you in section the transaction code (if you want to keep it) that you can validate with 75819 that you can validate with Send transaction. After a confirmation window, you can confirm one last time with the button Yes, I'm sure! Complete the transaction.

Warning : The amount is at indicate in US format: the comma is replaced by a period. To send 3.5 ether, specify 3.5. The site does not accept the comma.
